Program Faculty
The EM-PA Residency Faculty are all members of the Medical Staff of the Coast Plaza Doctors Hospital and are members of the Faculty of the Aristotle University School of Graduate Studies who possess the necessary qualifications to perform their functions as teaching Faculty. In accordance with the guidelines of the Association of Postgraduate Physician Assistant Programs, EM-PA Program faculty are responsible for the administration and coordination of didactic and clinical portions of the EM-PA curriculum and are specifically responsible for: (a) developing the mission statement of the program; (b) selecting applicants for entry into the program; (c) providing instruction; (d) evaluating PA resident performance; (e) academic counseling; (f) assuring the availability of remedial instruction; (g) designing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating curriculum; and (h) administering and evaluating the program.
All EM-PA Residency Faculty and instructors are (a) qualified through academic preparation and experience to teach assigned subjects; (b) knowledgeable in course content and effective in teaching assigned subjects; (c) responsible for evaluating PA resident performance and identifying PA residents who are not meeting expected competencies.
Program Director
In accordance with the guidelines of the Association of Postgraduate Physician Assistant Programs, the Program Director for the EM-PA is a physician who holds a fully active unrestricted current, valid, and unqualified license to practice medicine in the state in which the program exists, and be currently certified by an ABMS or AOA approved specialty board and experienced in the delivery of the type of health care services for which the PA resident is being educated. The Program Director has the requisite knowledge and skills to administer the program effectively and must be knowledgeable about and responsible for the accreditation process. The Program Director provides effective leadership and management and be knowledgeable about and responsible for the program’s: (a) organization; (b) administration; (c) fiscal management; (d) continuous review and analysis; (e) planning and (f) development. Together the Program Director and the Medical Director must assure and document that adequate supervision of PA resident is provided.
Medical Director
In accordance with the guidelines of the Association of Postgraduate Physician Assistant Programs, the Medical Director for the EM-PA Residency is a physician who holds a fully active unrestricted current, valid, and unqualified license to practice medicine in the state in which the program exists and be and be currently certified by an ABMS or AOA approved specialty board and experienced in the delivery of the type of health care services for which the PA resident is being educated. The Medical Director is (a) be knowledgeable about current practice standards and the PA role; (b) support the Program Director in assuring that competent medical guidance is provided so that both didactic and supervised clinical instruction meets current acceptable practice; and (c) be an advocate for the program within the sponsoring institution and the medical and academic communities.
PA Resident Duty Hours
The general guidelines for the EM-PA’s duty hours with respect to the PA Resident are adapted from ACGME Common Program Requirements, July, 2003 and July 2007. The EM-PA duty hour assignments shall recognize that the PA resident is not solely responsible for the safety and welfare of patients, but shares this responsibility with physicians and other health care providers of the institution.
Duty hours are defined as all clinical and academic activities related to the program, i.e., patient care (both inpatient and outpatient), administrative duties related to patient care, the provision for transfer of patient care, time spent in-house during call activities, and scheduled academic activities such as conferences. Duty hours do not include reading and preparation time spent away from the duty site.
Duty hours shall be limited to 60 hours per week, averaged over a 4 week period, inclusive of all in-house call activities (if any). The EM-PA Resident shall be provided with 1 day in 7 completely free from all educational and clinical responsibilities, averaged over a 4-week period, inclusive of call. One day is defined as one continuous 24-hour period free from all clinical, educational, and administrative activities. Additionally, adequate time for rest and personal activities shall be provided.
Accreditation
Currently, accreditation by the ARC-PA is a voluntary process. The Aristotle University – Coast Plaza Doctors Hospital Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Residency Program intends to apply for accreditation in the summer of 2009.
Board of Advisors
The EM-PA Residency Program has a Board of Advisors which provide advice, wisdom and counsel to the Program. The Board includes members from the various educational institutions and programs which send their PA students to Coast Plaza Doctors Hospital for their Emergency Medicine. Those institutions currently include: Coast Plaza Doctors Hospital; University of Southern California (USC); Charles-Drew University of Medicine and Science; Western University of Health Sciences; Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine (Oakland); Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine (Nevada); Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine; and Samuel Merritt College (San Francisco).
