This emergency medicine physician assistant residency program shall be known as the Aristotle University – Coast Plaza Doctors Hospital Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Residency Program (EM-PA).
Program Structure
The EM-PA Residency Program is a joint cooperative program offered by Aristotle University, Aristotle University School of Public Health, and the Coast Plaza Doctors Hospital Emergency Department, Norwalk, California. This program currently serves as the only current emergency physician assistant residency program in the State of California and the only physician assistant residency program in the United States which will grant a Master’s of Public Health (MPH) degree (from the Aristotle University School of Public Health) upon completion of the twelve (12) month training program. The EM-PA is primarily a clinically oriented educational program.
Currently, there are a total of approximately forty post-graduate physician assistant residency and fellowship programs offered in the United States which are listed as accredited and are members of the Association of Postgraduate Physician Assistant Programs. The nearest approved physician assistant (PA) emergency medicine (EM) Rresidency is located at the University of Texas (San Antonio). The other PA EM residency programs are located at Johns Hopkins, Medical College of Georgia, and are offered by the United States Army (Texas) and the Air Force (Ohio). California currently offers a total of only three PA residency programs (Arrowhead Regional (Surgery; Orthopaedics; OB/GYN)).
Mission Statement
The mission of the Aristotle University - Coast Plaza Doctors Hospital Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Residency Program is to provide an educational environment which fosters excellence in academia and clinical practice whereby the Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Resident attains expertise in the delivery of highest level of patient care and learns the critical relationship of emergency medicine to protecting the public’s health.
Program Description
The EM-PA Residency Program for physician assistants is a 12-month residency program to be offered on site at Coast Plaza Doctors Hospital (CPDH) in combination with Aristotle University. The EM-PA Residency Program shall include education and training in all aspects of emergency medical care inclusive of certification in Basic Healthcare Provider Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification (PALS), and Advanced Disaster Life Support (ADLS).
Additionally, the EM-PA Resident shall be required to also attain a Master’s of Public Health (MPH) degree from Aristotle University School of Graduate Studies concurrent with his/her responsibilities and duties through the EM-PA residency program at CPDH. No final Certificate of Completion of the EM-PA residency shall be granted unless and until all requirements for completion of the EM-PA residency program and the MPH degree shall be completed.
The EM-PA Residency Program shall primarily serve as a clinical postgraduate PA program which is a formal educational program in emergency medicine that offers a structured curricula, including didactic and clinical components, to educate graduates of an ARC-PA accredited entry level PA program who are National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) eligible or certified. As a clinical postgraduate PA program, the EM-PA Residency Program curricula is designed to build upon the knowledge and experience acquired during entry level generalist medical education for the PA, and to provide one means of enabling the graduate PA to assume a competent role on a specialty health care team.
The EM-PA Residency Program shall seek voluntary accreditation through the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). The EM-PA Residency Program shall seek to attain such accreditation after one year of operation.
The EM-PA Residency Program incorporates didactic instruction and clinical rotations to provide PA’s with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform and provide expertise in any emergency medicine setting. In addition to the scheduled rotations, emergency medicine teaching conferences will be held to support learning and will be scheduled weekly. Such conferences will be coordinated and conducted by clinical professionals and colleagues associated with the EM-PA Residency Program. Benefits will be provided as described below.

Credential & Degree Awarded
Each PA who successfully completes all requirements of the EM-PA Residency Program shall receive: (1) a “Certificate of Completion of the Aristotle University – Coast Plaza Doctors Hospital Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant Residency Program,” and (2) a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) from Aristotle University School of Public Health.
- Admission Requirements
The admission requirements for the EM-PA Residency includes:
- Undergraduate Bachelor's degree or equivalent;
- Graduation from an ARC-PA (Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.) approved PA Program;
- Master's preferred or evidence of commensurate work experience;
- Prior GPA of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale;
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants or anticipated date of exam;
- Evidence of maturity and educational ability to successfully complete AU-CPDH-EMPARP;
- Completion of In-person Interview;
- Two (2) Letters of Recommendation;
- Eligibility for or licensure in the State of California as a Physician’s Assistant;
- Basic Healthcare Provider Life Support certification;
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (ACLS);
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification (PALS);
- One year of clinical experience as a PA is desirable;

Benefits
The EM-PA resident will receive a yearly stipend paid of $38,000.00, and a $28,000.00 complete tuition waiver from Aristotle University for the Master’s of Public Health (MPH) degree. Additionally, the PA resident will be provided health and professional liability malpractice insurance and CME allowance. The resident will have two (2) weeks vacation; such vacation can not be taken within the first 6 months of the EM-PA and must be approved at least sixty (60) days in advance. Textbooks, medical equipment, and housing are the EM-PA resident’s responsibility.

The core curriculum for the EM-PA Residency Program is patterned after the current American College of Emergency Physician guidelines concerning emergency medicine education. The EM-PA Resident is primarily scheduled in the main and pediatric emergency sections of the CPDH-EM department. When on elective rotations, the EM-PA Resident shall provide concurrent coverage in the Emergency Department and the selected rotations through which the EM-PA Resident shall rotate. The EM-PA Residency Program is a twelve (12) month intensive didactic and clinical training program with scheduled rotations as listed below.
Each EM-PA Resident is required to maintain current education, training and certification consisting of Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Basic Disaster Life Support (BDLS) and Advanced Disaster Life Support (ADLS).
Additionally, the EM-PA Resident will receive instruction and gain expertise in the following fields of emergency medicine: Pre-hospital Care; Disaster Preparedness; ADLS; Resuscitative Problems and Techniques; ATLS; Airway Management; Shock; Analgesia, Anesthesia and Sedation; Emergency Wound Management; Cardiovascular Disease and Emergencies; Pulmonary Emergencies; Gastrointestinal Emergencies; Renal and Genitourinary Disorders; Gynecological and Obstetrics emergencies; Pediatrics Infectious Diseases; Toxicology and Pharmacology; Environmental Injuries; Emergency Medicine in Unique Environments; Endocrine Emergencies; Neurology; Eye, Ear, Nose, Throat and Oral Surgery emergencies; Disorders of the Skin; Trauma Non-traumatic Musculoskeletal Disorders; Psychosocial Disorders; Abuse and Assault; Principles of Imaging; Special Situations.
- EM-PA Residency Clinical Rotations shall include concurrent* clinical rotations as follows:
- Emergency Medicine (9 months)
- Critical Care (ICU) / Anesthesia (1 month)
- Internal Medicine (1 month)
- Pediatrics (2 weeks)
- Orthopaedic Surgery (2 weeks)
While rotating on Clinical Rotations, the EM-PA shall maintain primary responsibilities in the Emergency Department, but will follow (and maintain comprehensive teaching records) their specialty rotation patients. For instance, while on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) rotation, the EM-PA shall additionally have primary responsibilities in the Emergency Department but will additionally maintain close patient monitoring of their ICU patients.
Each EM-PA Resident shall participate in academic didactic educational programs on a regular scheduled basis and shall be responsible for (a) Emergency Medicine Teaching Rounds and Conferences (Case presentations; Morning Reports); (b) Journal Club; (c) Grand Rounds; (d) Procedure Lab. The EM-PA Resident shall coordinate all other students rotating through the Emergency Department and shall prepare weekly lectures and presentations for all students.
*The rotations through the ICU, Pediatrics and Orthopaedics shall be concurrent with rotations in the ER.
